What is ISO 45001?
ISO 45001:2018, here on referred to as ISO 45001, is the world’s first harmonised occupational health & safety management system standard. The new standard contains a number of key changes compared to the current (BS) OHSAS 18001 standard.
What is different about ISO 45001?
The new ISO 45001 was developed by a committee of occupational health and safety experts. It has been developed taking into account the requirements of (BS) OHSAS 18001, the International Labour Organization's (ILO) OSH Guidelines.
ISO 45001 has adopted the Annex SL high level structure as seen in the ISO 9001:2015 and ISO 14001:2015 standards that have already adopted this structure. Annex SL provides the framework for management system standards.
The new standard was launched on 12 March 2018.
Migration to ISO 45001
If you have certification to (BS) OHSAS 18001 you will need to migrate to ISO 45001 to maintain the validity of certification. There is the normal three year migration period so there is time to plan your move over to ISO 45001. However, we recommend you start straight away by obtaining a copy of the standard and other useful documents:
The new ISO 45001 standard can be purchased from the Exova BM TRADA bookshop via this link. To receive a 10% discount on the purchase price, please enter promo code EBMT2018
It is also recommended that you obtain a copy of BS 45002-0:2018 – General Guidelines for the application of ISO 45001:2018. This document provides the framework to help organisations successfully implement an OH&S management system based upon ISO 45001:2018 in a way that is proportionate to the organisations specific health and safety risks.
In addition the Chartered Quality Institute (CQI), with input from ISO / PC 283 (the committee that developed ISO 45001) have produced a very comprehensive report titled ISO 45001:2018 – Understanding the International Standard. The report:
- Provides a short overview of the standard, its application and comparisons with (BS) OHSAS 18001
- Examines in detail, the content of ISO 45001, translating each clause into plain English and considers the implications from the perspective of those entrusted with overseeing the operation of OH&S management systems
- Summarises the benefits all interested parties will obtain from the application of ISO 45001.
The above report can be purchased from the CQI website at a cost of £49.16 by clicking here.
Once you’ve done that, please contact your usual Certification Officer to discuss your next audit or a special audit during the migration process. They will also be able to send you a migration document which explains the process of migrating to the new standard.
