BM TRADA scores for AMEX

Posted on 30/10/2013

The £93m stadium, which sits on the edge of the South Downs National Park and was built by Buckingham Group Contracting, has impressively already netted numerous trophies:
  • Structural Steel Design Awards 2011
  • Considerate Constructors’ Bronze Award, 2011 National Finals
  • Overall Winner ICE Engineering Excellence Awards 2012
  • Best Technical award at the South East Region Building Excellence Awards
  • World’s Best New Sporting Venue 2012
BM TRADA was proud to undertake the air tightness testing in this magnificent stadium which was shown to achieve air permeability ratings well under the minimum level of 10m3/h/m2, required by Part L2a of the Building Regulations in England and Wales, Conservation of Fuel and Power.

With a building footprint of 30,400m² and a final seating capacity of 30,750, the stadium also offers first-class events and conferencing facilities, including 14 corporate hospitality boxes.

BM TRADA started air tightness testing within this highly complex building towards the end of its construction in March 2011, with the final test conducted in January 2013. All four stands were tested, including VIP areas, the club shop, the changing rooms and all offices within the building.

The objective of the tests was to measure the volume of conditioned air escaping through the building envelope via uncontrolled ventilation at an induced pressure difference of 50Pa. The tests involved setting up multiple fans in multiple locations to pressurise the building and then record the relevant pressure difference readings and fan flow rates, whilst also taking into account environmental conditions.

Against the mandatory requirement of less than 10m3/h/m2 the stadium was able to apply to Building Control for a Completion Certificate, without conducting any remedial work.

Barry Cope, Head of Section, Air and Acoustic Testing at BM TRADA explains:

“Air tightness plays a significant role in the energy efficiency of buildings. By limiting the leakage of heated or conditioned air from buildings, it is possible to reduce energy consumption and costs.

“BM TRADA has proven experience in this area, having conducted testing in several other football stadia, as well as in many of the UK’s largest regeneration projects and privately funded buildings.

“We deliver a comprehensive air tightness testing service, helping our clients to achieve on-going improvement based on practical guidance and advice before during and after testing.

“Furthermore, BM TRADA offers a comprehensive range of services for demonstrating the energy performance of buildings and their components, including energy assessments and acoustic testing. By providing a single point of contact, we can offer the most cost-effective testing programme for EPCs and Part L compliance”
