BM TRADA has extended its accreditation scope to include energy management systems certification following a successful pilot scheme with UKAS.

ISO-50001-Accreditation-300x200.jpgThe global certification body were part of a pilot accreditation programme run in conjunction with UKAS (United Kingdom Accreditation Service) for the new ISO 50001:2011 energy management systems standard. UKAS is the sole national accreditation body recognised by government to assess, against internationally agreed standards, organisations that provide certification, testing, inspection and calibration services.

Accreditation by UKAS means that that BM TRADA has demonstrated the competence, impartiality and performance capability of these evaluators. With accreditation now in place, BM TRADA is approved to offer accredited ISO 50001 certification to businesses around the world wishing to improve energy efficiency and reduce their carbon footprint. These include industry sectors which have heavy energy usage, such as transport, process industries including food production and manufacturers, public sector organisations hospitals, schools and local authority buildings, energy companies and construction firms.

According to Tom Johnston, Chief Operating Officer of Central Certification Services at BM TRADA, rising energy costs and increasing regulatory pressure to reduce carbon emissions are making the need for effective energy management a priority for all organisations.

He said: ““In conjunction with UKAS, BM TRADA has successfully demonstrated competence to offer ISO 5001 certification across the full scope of business sectors and industries and we are already helping heavy energy companies achieve certification.

“The new standard is easy to implement, is designed to cause minimal disruption and integrates with other management systems such as ISO 14001 environmental management systems.

“Whether you are a sole trader or a multinational organisation in the public or private sector, ISO 50001 certification can be of real benefit, helping to protect against future energy price hikes and lowering a firm's energy consumption and carbon footprint.”

Despite being relatively new to the market, ISO 50001 certification is rapidly becoming one of the most popular standards. According to a survey by ISO, the number of ISO 50001 certificates increased by 332 per cent year-on-year between 2011 and 2012.

A recent report from independent analyst firm Verdantix, meanwhile, found that 46 per cent of corporations have now initiated a global energy management strategy. Of those, one third said that compliance with legislation was the key driver while another 32 per cent identified cost savings as the primary factor for implementation.
